Sailing as an activity produces very little impact on the environment however a number of factors associated with the activity do produce a negative impact. Below are a number of measures Explore NZ use to mitigate these negative factors.

Boats are rinsed after each trip with a hose attached to a spray gun. This prevents water wastage and also reduces the use of chemicals required for cleaning. When cleaning is required those used are biodegradable. Boarding passes are re usable.

Passengers are encouraged to use public transport to the departure point.

Passengers staying in the city are encouraged to walk to the departure point

We don’t require vouchers upon check in and encourage and support those wholesalers and agents who have instigated this policy

Boat batteries are re conditioned until they are no longer viable, then recycled back with the manufacturer.

Used sailing rope is re cased, to extend to life of each length.

Recycling bins are provided and are used to collect all plastic and aluminium cans. Rubbish bin liners are biodegradable
